Week 15 – Victorian & Historical Revivals
INT 231 – History of Interiors
By: Nicol Valeria Torres VillamilWeek 15 – Victorian & Historical RevivalsThis week we learned about the Victorian period as well as the Historical Revival styles that defined the 19th century. Mixing historical styles, the Gothic Revival, Renaissance Revival, Rococo Revival, Egyptian Revival, and several others, characterized the Victorian era the most. Rather than sticking to a single aesthetic, the designers drew on history and elegantly mixed it into very decorative and expressive interiors.Victorian design was very much so decorated to the maximum extent. The heavy draperies, patterned wallpapers, carved furniture, dark woods, and bold colors like burgundy, green, and gold were the elements of the interiors. On the other hand, the Industrial Revolution led to the production of furniture, textiles, and wallpapers at a cheaper price which made it possible for middle-class homes to imitate the style of the rich families. All the historical revival styles were so pervasive that one could easily see Gothic pointed arches, Medieval carved chairs, Renaissance ornament, Rococo curves, and Egyptian and Moorish details all around. The period had the character of being eclectic and dramatic because the people just did not care and mixed everything together.Historical ImagesHouses of Parliament – Gothic Revival Architecture

Steampunk & Vintage Design
A modern reinterpretation of Victorian aesthetics using metal, industrial elements, and antique decor.
For my “One Step Further,” I chose William Morris, he applied his creativity in the forms of wallpapers, textiles, and furniture with incessant floral patterns, natural dyes, and handcrafting techniques. The designs that won him the most popularity and acclaim are "Strawberry Thief," "Willow Bough," and "Trellis". His influence was such that he incited designers to focus on quality rather than quantity and thereby, transformed the trajectory of modern interior design.
Reflection
The Victorian and Historical Revival period showed me how design can express emotion, personality, and imagination. Instead of choosing one style, people blended many traditions and created bold, layered interiors. Even though the designs were busy, they reflected a moment in history when technology and culture were changing fast.
The maximum I loved was to witness how Victorian eclecticism still hampers the present day design especially in the cases of maximalist and vintage interiors. This era has been a reminder to me that design is not always required to be simple; in fact, sometimes, the beauty is in the marrying of history, creativity and personality.
The example of the modern eclectic interior is really cool! It's very different and bold
ResponderBorrarI like the paneling of the sage green interior. The combination of modern and historic art and furniture pieces creates an engaging space.
